February 2012 Registration is Now Open!

Immigrant Artist Project (IAP)

Individual Consultation Initiative

What is the IAP Individual Consultation Initiative?

This initiative provides immigrant artists with practical and professional advice from an arts professional who has extensive experience in supporting artists in the areas of visual and/or performing arts. Our professionals can provide you with expert feedback on activities such as how to develop a project, put together a portfolio, find resources, and research spaces in which to exhibit or perform. Each in-person appointment is $30 for a 30-minute session. An artist can meet with the professionals with a limit of three appointments.

When will the next session take place?

Monday, February 27th, 6-9pm

Who are the consultants?

Andrea Arroyo is a Mexican-born artist based in New York. Her projects include studio work, public art and commissions. Arroyo has an extensive exhibition record and her work is in numerous collections, including The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Institute, and The New York Public Library. She has received numerous awards including 21 Leaders for the 21st Century, Groundbreaking Latina in the Arts, Official Artist of the Latin Grammys, NY City Council Citation Award for Achievement in Art, Outstanding Latina of the Year, the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, the Manhattan Community Arts Fund of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Puffin Foundation grant. As a curator, Arroyo's projects include "Art without Borders", "AriZONA, Artists Respond to the Immigration Issue" and "September 11-Past, Present, Future." She has featured the work of over 100 artists in solo and group exhibitions in New York. With her experience, Arroyo can guide artists in the areas of portfolio presentation, promotion, commissions, exhibitions, grants, and the artist-gallery relationship.

Shannon Brunette received her Masters of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts (New York) in 2006. Currently, she is the Program Manager for Lambent Foundation, which focuses on innovative grant making and programs at the intersections of art and social justice. She serves on the advisory board of Artists on the Brink, which raises funds and awareness for various social causes through artistic collaborations. Brunette is also an artist working with Super 8 (her grandma's canon 310XL) and digital video to create installations and short films, often collaborating with choreographers and musicians. Beyond her own film/video work she has produced several multimedia events featuring performing, visual and media artists. She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY since 1998 and her beloved hometown is St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN. With her experience, Brunette can guide artists in the areas of grant writing, budgeting and financial management, strategizing/planning next steps, building relationships with curators or presenters, identifying and obtaining resources, and articulating artistic vision and goals.

Denise Carvalho is a Brazilian-born artist, art critic, independent curator and scholar who lives and works in New York City. Her interests in art include Brazilian contemporary art, the art of collectives, interdisciplinary and new media art, and the blur between art, politics, and economics. As an art critic, she has published numerous articles in magazines such as Art in America, Sculpture, Art Nexus, and The International Journal of Art and Society, as well as in artists' catalogues. As a curator, her exhibitions include "Minimal Differences" at White Box, NYC (2010), "Intangible Interferences" at Momenta Art (2010), and "A Part of No-Part" at the Chelsea Museum, NYC (2010). She has curated international exhibitions and symposia such as Hybrid Dwellings at Arsenal Gallery in Poland (2001). Since 2008, she has been an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts and Cultural Studies and Director of Independent Studies at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. Dr. Carvalho's expertise encompasses providing artists with a critical and curatorial view of their work; providing them with theoretical background that inform their work; helping them to conceptualize the writing of a strong proposal; and suggesting galleries and residencies according to the work's conceptual or practical direction.

Dance and the Occupy Movement

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 7:30pm

Presented by the Movement Research Studies Project
Organized by Abigail Levine Hosted by the Hemispheric Institute of Performance & Politics

"Exploring an expanded notion of choreography and how it is related to our social and political organization and discovery of ourselves as individuals working within a temporary collective... circling and questioning around ideas of a moving community." —Movement Research Festival Spring 2011 brochure

"Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone." —Declaration of the Occupation, NYC General Assembly

What are the points of contact between experimental, contemporary dance and the Occupy Movement? As spatial and embodied practice? As social investigation and organization? As improvisation and movement? As agents of change? How do and might these moving communities interact? How do we approach (public and private) space in New York City? Barbara Browning, Daniel Lang-Levitsky, Paloma McGregor, Clarinda Mac Low, and Edisa Weeks open a conversation about this creative political moment.

Dear friends

I'm glad to reconnect with news about New American Girls, Soy Andina and more. Sorry for the silence. Back in July, NY State picked me for grand jury -- for a month. I was glad to serve, but a lot of work got postponed. I think we're back on track now. Take a look below. And thanks as always for your interest and comments. It means a lot. -- Mitch

NEW AMERICAN GIRLS

This is the new web project for Latino Public Broadcasting about undocumented college grads.

See my July newsletter for the overview, and this post for the reactions. Updates:

  • Most video has been shot - editing lies ahead. Due date is end of January 2012.

  • Next week I plan to launch the Kickstarter campaign -- a 30-day online campaign to raise finishing funds. Don't worry, I'll remind you:) We've got a 1-minute trailer and nice rewards. I'll need your help to spread the word. More next week.

  • Yes, you'll also be able to donate by check, and get a tax deduction -- corporate matching grants too. Thanks to all who asked.

  • What about a website? It's coming. I'm woefully behind. Need to finish copy for the site (and Facebook page). The Kickstarter page will serve as our web page, for now.

CONSULTING

For years I've been consulting and speaking on doc fundraising and marketing. I've been pretty low key about this, though will launch a website soon with more info. But for now -- here's a project I couldn't wait to share:

"Prodigal Daughter" is my friend Mabel Valdiviezo's deeply personal doc-in-progress about her quest to reconcile with her Peruvian family after 16 years of separation (Mabel lives in the Bay Area). Check out this clip.

This will be a must-see film for Soy Andina fans. Mabel is a talented filmmaker and she's tapped into a theme both intensely Peruvian and universal.

Sun, 17 Jul 2011 09:48:00 -0700 PROXIMO EVENTO EN ANDAMARCA: CONSAGRACION DEL DANZANTE DE TIJERAS http://www.mitchellteplitsky.com/proximo-evento-en-andamarca-consagracion-del http://www.mitchellteplitsky.com/proximo-evento-en-andamarca-consagracion-del

Contacto: Zozo Munar, Presidente, Mission Andes   zozomunar@hotmail.com

Amigos:

First -- thanks for all the comments to "The New American Girls" announcement. It really helps to know people are interested.

I wouldn't normally email so soon, but wanted to promote some upcoming Soy Andina screenings -- including a big one tomorrow at National Geographic in D.C. See below.

To inquire about bringing Soy Andina to your universiy or institution, just write me.

To buy the DVD for educational or public screenings, click here

Sun July 17 | Washington, D.C.
National Geographic Live co-hosted by Peru Embassy
Besides the fact that it's Nat Geo, what makes this event special is that both now-legendary "stars" will participate -- Cynthia to dance, and Nelida to join us by phone from Cieneguilla, Peru. I'll be on hand too, for Q & A and hand Cynthia her silver sharpie for signing DVDs. This is part of an all-day celebration of Peru, tied to the 100th anniversary of Hiram Bingham's expedition to Machu Picchu.

........................................................

Fri, July 22 | Valenencia, Spain
Cine Peruano Ollantay, a Cultural Association based in Valencia, is organizing a month-long series of Peru events. Soy Andina will screen with MadeinUSA.

........................................................

Fri, Aug. 12, 8 pm | Lima, Peru
A free public screening of Soy Andina will be presented at the International Expressive Arts Therapy Conference. Nelida will be on hand for Q & A (no dance scheduled, but I bet something breaks out with Neli in the house).Weirdly, the conference is down. Look for updates over on the Soy andina website, my blog or our Facebook page.

........................................................

Sat, Nov. 5 | Philadelphia TENTATIVE
University of Pennsylvania

We're in discussions with my alumni university to finally bring Soy Andina to Philadelphia. It would be for homecoming weekend -- a perfect thematic fit.

Thank you! - Mitch

Sat, 16 Jul 2011 12:30:00 -0700 E-Newsletter (7-14-11) "Announcing our New Project for Latino Public Broadcasting" http://www.mitchellteplitsky.com/e-newsletter-7-14-11-announcing-our-new-proje http://www.mitchellteplitsky.com/e-newsletter-7-14-11-announcing-our-new-proje

Dear Friends:

Announcing our new project-in-development for Latino Public Broadcasting -- the "New American Girls"

The stories of young women raised in the USA, aiming for careers in medicine, law and education. Only they're not "documented" -- they could even be deported.

Have you heard of the Dream Act? This legislation applies to them. Youth who were raised here but born elsewhere, brought here by undocumented parents.

These kids grew up as Americans. They're probably more patriotic than you or I. But lacking a social security number, they can't get goverment grants or loans for college, or work legally. They also live in fear. They're stuck.

The Dream Act bill would provide a pathway to residency for children of undocumented immigrants who came here as children, graduated high school, and attend college or serve in the military. It failed to pass last December.

Why this story?

I don't consider myself an "activist" or "social issue" filmmaker. I just like telling stories about people I like. That's how this thing started.

I first met one of our subjects, Patricia, in Denver two years ago. She was in a high school program introducing academically talented girls to engineering. I discovered she was undocumented.

I started learning about others in her situation, and about the Dream Act. I realized this was a huge national issue. But sort of under the radar. With all the rhetoric about "illegal immigrants," who was talking about the 2 million-plus studying in our schools, raised as Americans?

I started following more news on TV and online about immigration, and was appalled by the rhetoric, bullshit, and sheer inaccuracy of most of it.

What I hope to do is share some personal stories about undocumented youth, in their own words. Put a face on the issue.

To state the obvious, especially if you know me personally:

I like immigrants. I think it's what makes the US special. I don't believe in opening the borders to anyone. I respect the law. I do support the Dream Act because current immigration laws are flawed. You may disagree. That's Ok. I don't want to preach to the converted. Just inspire some sane conversation.

Our characters include:

  • Lorella, a leader for Connecticut Students for a Dream, born in Peru
  • Jennifer, a graduate of Yale, raised in Texas, born in Colombia
  • Patricia from Denver, with a lifelong dream to be a doctor, born in Mexico

We're doing this as a "new media" series

That's a sort of vague term for videos for the web, where viewership is exploding. We are making a series of short (1-3 minute) "Webisodes" about the subjects, that can be easily viewed and shared online.

"OK, enough talk, when can I actually SEE it?"

We're editing these "webisodes" now, and still shooting. We'll be putting together a short (45-60 second) "trailer) for early August. A website and Facebook page are in the works too.

Best case scenario -- we finish by September for Latino Public Broadcasting to distribute to PBS or other public media for Hispanic Heritage Month.

Here's the thing (and some of you could see this coming): lots of work remains, and we're running out of money.

We got three grants -- from Latino Public Broadcasting, Paul Robeson, and Puffin Foundation. That's an achievement, and I'm grateful. But grants these days aren't enough, and we just got turned down for one I was expecting. Ouch.

That's where you guys come in (you saw this coming, right?)

I'm going to launch a fundraising campaign in August focusing on fans, friends and supporters. We have a big (several thousand) fan base from Soy Andina, and online tools to spread the word.

We need to raise about $25,000 (most of that will go to pay my co-producers/editors, all Latin American women themselves who know a thing or two about immigration. More about the team in the weeks ahead.)

"Crowdfunding" is how we made Soy Andina (before that term became in vogue). We'll offer incentives, make it fun. You pledge what you want. If half our mailing list kicks in $15, we're done. It's highly doable. In fact, there is no way we won't succeed, because the project depends on it.

Please bare with me. First we have to make the trailer so you get to see something! Then we'll launch the campaign.

If reading this is enough and you want to get behind this now, or find out more, great. Write me.

"What about that Scissors Dance project you were all hot about?"

This time last year I was in Peru, plotting a documentary with Peruvian filmmaker Gaby Yepes about the remarkable "scissors dancers" from the Andes.

We traveled to a fiesta in the deep Andes, shot material, edited clips. We learned that Japanese public TV (NHK) was interested. The project was pitched. And we waited, and waited...then the horrifying Japanese Tsunumi struck.

We were told NHK stopped funding new international projects after that. So there went our major funding prospect.

This is a film that could still happen some day. But with New American Girls looming, I had to move on.

Meantime -- want to see those clips? They're on Gaby's website.

I'll be back real soon. Thank you! - Mitch

It's a great lead-in to what I'm working on now -- The New American Girls. Portraits of strong, smart, college grads, fighting for their legal status. Coming to Public Broadcasting this fall. I've been way too quiet about it. That's going to change, soon. Watch for a newsletter in your inbox next week....
